The following are the steps that may help block a website on Google Chrome.

On the router itself

One of the first methods is to block a site on the router, especially when managing a domain network. It is suggested to prevent a website through a router since it requires password protection, an essential aspect of domain network management.

Blocking a website can help parents prevent their children from accessing specific sites while connected to the home network.

Following are the steps that need to be followed:

  • Open a browser and visit the default router address:  http://192.168.1.1 while being connected to the home network. 
  • Routers setups may vary depending on the manufacturer. 
  • You need to look for the settings which say ‘PARENTAL CONTROL, ‘FIREWALL,’ or ‘SECURITY.’ 

On Windows

Using chrome extension isn’t the only way you can block sites; you can always run Notepad as administrator and prevent the websites you would never want in your sight.

Steps to block sites using Notepad are:

  • Click on start, search for Notepad, click on it, and run it as administrator.
  • Allow Notepad to make changes to your computer.
  •  After the Notepad opens, click on File on the top-left side of the menu bar and click on open.
  • Follow the following file path to reach the host directory

  • Now select All Files as the view type to see all the files available. Open hosts.

  • Restart your computer to see functional changes. The site you’ve blocked wouldn’t open the next time you try opening it.

On The Chrome Browser

Steps

  • Go to the MenuMenu by clicking on the three-dots button.
  • Click on Advanced Settings.
  • Click on Change Proxy Settings under the Network option. A Windows Internet Properties window will appear.
  • Click on the Privacy tab and then on the Sites button. Here you can add the URL of any web site you wish to block.
  • Click OK. ( Repeat to block as many websites you want).

Supervised User

There is also a pretty unconventional method to block a website in Google Chrome. The way it is done is to create a supervised user account on Chrome and switch to the newly created user.

Following are the steps:

  • Open Google Chrome.
  • Click on the three-dot MenuMenu on the top right corner to go to Settings.
  • Under ‘People,’ click on the option which says ‘Manage Other People.’
  • Click on ‘Add Person’ and enter the name of the new user. Check the ‘Supervise this person’ box and then save the person.
  • Go to https://chrome.google.com/manage and go to ‘Permissions’ and click on ‘Manage.’
  • Add the list of websites that you want to block. (Choose appropriate behavior for the URL)
  • Type 127.0.0.1 and URL name of the website you want to be gone without any comments (#) tag.
  • Restart your computer to see functional changes. The site you’ve blocked wouldn’t open the next time you try opening it.

Using an Extension from the Google Chrome Web Store

Several extensions can be used to block websites in Google Chrome. The extensions are listed below: 

  • Block Site Extension

Chrome extensions do the needful whenever required, and one such extension is BlockSite, which helps you block the website you do not need anymore. Simple ways in which BlockSite can be implemented are as follows.

Step 1: Search for BlockSite on your search bar and click on the search option, which directs you to that page.

Step 2: After the link gets opened, the BlockSite page would look like this, and you will have to click on add extension to access BlockSite.

Step 3: Click on add extension as soon as a confirmation prompt shows up.

After the confirmation prompt, a chrome extension downloader should start.

Step 4: A new page will open, thanking you for installing BlockSite. You will have to accept the privacy policy of BlockSite to continue.

By accepting the terms and conditions, the BlockSite extension page should already open. In case you want to manually do it in another way, follow the remaining steps.

Always remember that this is a chrome extension and it will only work on the chrome browser and no other browsers like firefox, yahoo, bing etc.

Step 5: Open a new Chrome browser, search for a site which you do not use anymore and would want it to be gone. Right click on one of the search options given below and you can find Block Site- Website Blocker to block the specified link.

Copy the link of the website you want to be blocked and click on the BlockSite extension you can find just above the bookmarks bar.

Step 6: Click on the chrome extension to block sites.

Now enter the URL with its domain name and click on the plus symbol towards the bar’s extreme right, colored in green to add the website’s name.

Step 7: After the blocked website gets added, it should look like this.

You can always add as many websites as you wish to, and you can remove either of them if you ever feel like.
