Artificial Intelligence: The Four Types

Artificial Intelligence

It is a term that we hear more and more, in several aspects Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already part of our lives. With machines capable of learning and seeking their own solutions to the problems that arise, the applications that make and will make use of this technological advance are numerous. One of them is an application that allows a company to implement AI data annotation which can help it save a lot of money and time.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is the ability of a machine or computer system to partially emulate the behavior of the human mind, developing capabilities that until recently were only within the reach of the human brain. It is based on processes that include supervised learning, reasoning, and self-correction.

Although the term Artificial Intelligence may still sound like science fiction to many, the truth is that it is already present in many areas of society and its use and development continue to grow; it is in the hoods, in the candidate selection processes, it is used in health and sanitation, in the analysis of Big Data, in video games, in autonomous vehicles, etc.

The first time it was coined was in 1956, by the American mathematician John MacCarthy, at the Dartmouth Conference. Since then, it has continued to develop, although it still has a long way to go before it can talk about fully autonomous and self-aware AI systems.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

The operation of Artificial Intelligence depends to a large extent on the algorithms and processes used to develop it or on the objectives that are pursued with it; therefore we can talk about different types of AI software. A first difference can be made between weak AI and strong AI systems. The former, also known as narrow AI, are systems designed and trained to perform a single task. While the latter, also called artificial general intelligence, are systems that have generalized human cognitive abilities, so that they have the ability to find the solution to a given task on their own.

A second way of distinguishing between types of AI is found in the categorization made by Arend Hintze, professor of integrative biology and engineering and computer science at Michigan State University. Hintze distinguishes between 4 types of AI.

We see them in detail below:

AI

Reactive machines

Reactive machines are the most basic type of Artificial Intelligence; they are based on decisions about the present. The machines have no memory and, therefore, cannot look to the past to learn from past experiences and are unable to evolve.

Limited memory

Memory-limited AI machines are capable of looking back but in a limited and temporary way. In this way, they can store the information they collect for a certain time and add it to their programming to create new patterns of behavior and response for the not-too-distant future. That is, they are not capable of making complete and lasting representations over time.

Theory of mind

The theory of mind presents systems or machines whose AI allows them to understand how their environment works, that is, the people, objects, and other systems that surround them. They are systems capable of learning based on our behaviors and deducing and knowing what our tastes, needs, desires, or even how we expect to be treated are.

Self-awareness

We have arrived at what is still science fiction terrain because currently there is no type of AI with self-awareness. It would be an Artificial Intelligence that has developed awareness of itself and is capable of recognizing itself as an independent entity, which can make its own decisions, differentiating between it and the objects, people, and systems that surround it. It would be the first step in what he has called the uniqueness of technology.
