Is Text-Only Mode for Websites Commonly Used?

web design

Modern websites use various elements to attract viewers. They include images, graphics, text in different fonts, videos, etc. Some websites meet the standard of loading speed, between two and five seconds. However, other websites take time to load. The problem could be with web design, images and other visual elements, and slow internet connection.

But colors and graphics attract website visitors. The visual elements that web visitors immediately see establish the brand’s identity. But for the visually impaired, these colors and other features may not matter much.

Text-only Mode

Sometimes you want to do away with the graphics, images, and other visual elements on a web page. Removing these elements can improve the page’s download speed, which is appropriate for people with slow internet connections. Also, without the visual elements and media files, you can focus on the written content. It could be a refreshing way to read e-books and interesting blogs on your computer.

Although the text-only mode is seldom used today, it is still possible to use it on some browsers. In addition, several websites use different methods to ensure that people can view the site in text mode from other browsers.

You can chance upon some websites that offer two versions of the site, the primary version with all the elements and features and a text-only version to improve accessibility to persons with disabilities. In the highly competitive online environment, businesses cannot afford to have their website down even for a few hours. If your website is undergoing repair or updating, using accessibility overlays will ensure that the site is still accessible to all.

Favorable to the Visually Impaired

Most businesses ensure that they comply with the web accessibility guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Compliance with ADA means that even persons with visual impairment can access websites.

Visually impaired persons use screen readers. One of the common problems is the lack of text descriptions of graphic elements. A text-only website can solve the issues that hinder people with disabilities from enjoying the website.

However, having a text-only version of a site is expensive and difficult to maintain. In addition, several web developers think that using a text-only website cannot solve the accessibility issue. Most users of screen readers, like people with visual impairment, hard of hearing, with limited hand use, and cognitive or learning disabilities, might find it challenging to navigate a text-only site.

They suggest using a website that is consistently laid out and organized. In addition, it should allow the user to resize graphics and text, provide multiple ways to access audio content and use the keyboard for site navigation.

Although a text-only site can improve accessibility for people with disability, maintenance presents a challenge to website owners. Since they need to maintain and update two websites, it can be financially draining.

Luckily, the web standards community is working on the guidelines for text-only sites. In the meantime, browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Edge running on Windows 10 allow users to view in text-only mode by blocking JavaScript and images through some changes in the browser settings.
